Guided tour by a Heligan gardener

On this small-group experience, you will be taken behind the scenes and under the soil of the gardens by a horticulturist from the small, dedicated team that works in this unique garden every day. They will share stories of horticultural intrigue, show you what is currently in season and explain the rhythms that keep over 300 varieties of Heligan’s heritage crops thriving year-round.

You will explore the walled kitchen garden, melon yard and flower garden, and enjoy a close look at Europe’s only working pineapple pit. There will be plenty of time for questions, gardening tips to take home, and insight into what it takes to run this extraordinary garden.

The Art of the Productive Garden

Heligan’s productive gardens are unlike anywhere else in Britain. Their faithful restoration in the 1990s centred on a celebration of the skills of late Victorian head gardeners and their teams, honouring their knowledge in producing a constant bounty for the Heligan estate. Today’s horticulturists know every inch of the soil and continue to use traditional techniques to grow a remarkable range of heritage fruit and vegetable varieties.

  • Please note that this session will involve walking our paths in all weathers. Please ensure that you wear suitable footwear and dress for the weather.
  • If you would like to take notes, please bring a notebook and pen.
