Guided tour by a Heligan gardener

The Jungle team at Heligan will lead you on foot along raised boardwalks and pond paths, among giant gunnera, prehistoric tree ferns and towering redwoods. The tree ferns have grown here for more than a century, hidden from the world while the rest of the garden slumbered, with some standing up to four metres tall.

 Your guide will reveal the history behind significant specimens, share stories of Victorian plant hunters and their relationship with Heligan, and show you some of the collection’s most remarkable recent additions.

A deeper look at Heligan’s most iconic and atmospheric space

There is nowhere quite like Heligan’s Jungle, a mysterious, misty place shrouded in horticultural secrets. The steep-sided valley shelters a warm microclimate, and the giants that grow there reflect that, forming an extraordinary collection of plants from across the world, many with histories reaching back to Victorian plant hunters.

The exotic species in the Jungle reflect the adventurous spirit of horticulture, evolving the collection with the same curiosity that drove the original plant collectors. Come and hear those stories at first hand.

Essential information

  • Please note that this session will involve walking outside in all weathers. Please ensure that you dress for the weather.
  • Access to the jungle involves steep paths and the jungle boardwalk is not wheelchair accessible. Please wear sturdy footwear.
  • If you would like to take notes, please bring a notebook and pen.
  • You are welcome to take photographs during the tour, so don’t forget your camera.
