What are Lost Suppers?

This April, we invite you to join us for another incredible seven course tasting menu.

"April is the cruellest month…” so the poet tells us but in the past, April really was a dangerous month in Britain. Before the advent of refrigeration and global trade, April was the point of the year when the stocks of winter stores began to dwindle, while the fields and kitchen gardens had yet to deliver any produce.  This is known as the hungry gap or more brutally, the dying month.

Lost Suppers are about connections, the connection between people, the soil, the planet and food. In the current climate it’s never been more important to talk about food miles and eating from the land has always been the way at Heligan, that’s what it was built for.

The focus of our April Lost Supper is to showcase how we use ingredients effectively to provide wholesome and comforting meals in this difficult month. We'll explore pickling and preserving, cuts of meat and how we can still enjoy dessert treats when the stores are at their lowest.

The menu is never published beforehand as it is written after the gardeners have listed what’s available or what’s in season, which makes it completely ingredient led and 5 out of 7 courses will always be vegetarian.

Our Lost Suppers will be held within the Heligan Kitchen Conservatory. Doors will open at 6:30pm with a welcome drink for all upon arrival.

The Heligan Shop will remain open a little later during our Lost Supper evenings. Diners can enjoy 15% discount in the Heligan Shop before their unique evening dining experience begins.
