Magical moth mornings at Heligan
- 13th Jun 2026
- 7am - 9am
- £20pp
- £18 for Heligan members
Discover the remarkable diversity of moth species at Heligan in this engaging sunrise session with Dr Will Hawkes. Learn to recognise their names, explore their hidden lives and uncover the fascinating stories behind these often-overlooked night-time pollinators.
Course Detail
Meet at Reception at first light before heading out to check the moth traps set the previous evening. As the gardens begin to stir, you’ll gather around the trap to discover which nocturnal visitors have been recorded overnight.
Dr Will Hawkes will guide you through the process of identifying the moths, introducing key distinguishing features, markings and behaviours. Alongside practical identification skills, you’ll learn how to set and manage your own moth trap responsibly and gain insight into the fascinating life histories of these often-overlooked insects.
The session will also explore how to accurately record your findings so that your observations can contribute to wider citizen science initiatives, helping to build a clearer picture of local biodiversity.
If moth numbers are low, or time allows, the morning will continue with a gentle nature walk through the grounds of Heligan — an opportunity to broaden the focus and explore what else is stirring in the early hours.

About Will Hawkes
Will Hawkes is an insect research scientist, photographer and storyteller. He grew up in the wilds of Northeast Wales surrounded by the natural world and moved down to Cornwall ten years ago to begin his academic journey. Through his research into migratory insects, he has worked all over the world learning their stories and behaviours.
Will adores insects, they have given him so much in this life and his main aim is to give something back to them. Inspiring people to share his passion for these tiny lives is the most important thing for him as it leads to more understanding and then on to the hopeful protection of these remarkable little animals.
