August is the month to prune a trained apple tree; and ours is particularly special. Join us in the Productive Garden to learn the art of summer pruning, then have a go on the iconic apple arch itself. Beginners welcome.

There's a reason our apple arch stops people in their tracks. Trained and tended over many years, it's a living example of what patient, thoughtful pruning can achieve.

Summer pruning is the secret behind every well-kept arch, espalier, and cordon. Unlike winter pruning, which spurs a tree into fresh growth, summer pruning gently restrains it: tidying the shape, letting light and air reach the fruit, and encouraging the buds that will bear next year's apples. It's the perfect technique to learn on a trained tree, and there's no better one to learn it on than ours.

Led by one of our gardeners, you'll begin with the why: how an apple tree grows, what summer pruning achieves, and how to read a tree before you make a single cut. We'll cover the tools, the timing, and how to tell which shoots to shorten and which to leave.

Then comes the part you won't get anywhere else — you'll practise directly on the iconic arch that runs through our Productive Garden, guided at every step. By the end, you'll understand how form, fruit and health all come from the choices made with a pair of secateurs.

Whether you have an orchard, a single trained tree, or simply a love of how gardens are made, you'll leave with practical skills and a new appreciation for one of Heligan's best-loved sights.

What you will learn:

• Why summer is the season to prune trained apple trees

• How summer pruning shapes growth, ripens fruit and builds next year's buds

• When to prune and the kit you'll need

• How to "read" a tree and choose which shoots to cut

• Hands-on practice on Heligan's iconic apple arch

• The confidence to summer-prune your own trees at home
