Fungi Foray After Dark | Discover the hidden world of fungi
- 10th Oct 2026
- 6pm - 8pm
When the sun goes down, Heligan comes alive in a completely different way.
Join our expert-led after-dark fungi foray and explore the gardens, woodlands and meadows by UV light. Search for fungi, lichens and tiny creatures that suddenly reveal a secret world of colour beneath your torch.
Along the way, our fungi specialists will help you identify fascinating species, discover where they grow and uncover the vital role fungi play in healthy ecosystems.
And keep your eyes peeled for something even more magical: bioluminescent fungi, sometimes known as foxfire, which can produce their own eerie glow in the darkness.

Good to know
This is an outdoor, after-dark experience, so please come prepared for the Cornish weather.
- Wear: Warm, comfortable layers and waterproof clothing. It can feel surprisingly cold once the sun goes down.
- Footwear: Sturdy, comfortable shoes or boots are essential. We'll be walking on a variety of paths and terrain in the dark.
- Bring: An ordinary torch to help you find your way between stops. UV torches are provided, so there's no need to bring your own.
- Fungi: Fungi are seasonal and completely dependent on weather and conditions, so we can't guarantee which species we'll find — but there's always something fascinating to look for.
- Experience: No previous knowledge of fungi is needed. The foray is suitable for beginners and those with some experience.
- Weather: Please check the forecast before you come and dress accordingly. This experience takes place outdoors.
- Wildlife: We'll be exploring natural habitats after dark, so expect uneven ground and the possibility of mud.
A proportion of proceeds will be donated to Three Bays Wildlife, a local community-led wildlife group.
Come curious. Look closer. See in the dark.
