Volunteering at The Lost Gardens

The Lost Gardens of Heligan Volunteer Programme

We view our Volunteer programme as a service to the community, rather than a gain for ourselves.  Having said that, we take great pleasure from bringing these wonderful grounds and all they have to offer to others and there is no better way to do this than share our skills in working the earth.

We are an equal opportunities organisation and welcome applications from anyone and everyone.

We have a limited number of placements and seek to offer volunteer work to those who would gain the most from it.  This may be because volunteering would help improve mental wellbeing, physical mobility or in reducing isolation.  It may be that you are struggling, without requisite work experience, to gain paid employment, and short term volunteering/work experience may assist you with that. In that event we are happy to provide a volunteer reference at the end of the period.

What can you expect as a volunteer?

All volunteers have their fuel for traveling to Heligan reimbursed, and discounts on food during volunteer hours.  Long term volunteers will also receive a free family entry pass to the gardens, and Eden.

We offer volunteer placements currently within our gardening team and during some of our events, but if there is another area you are interested in we are always open to new avenues.

Our volunteers will be provided with a full induction in their chosen area, including a Health & Safety briefing. You will also benefit from a Volunteer Mentor who will be allocated to you on your arrival so you always have a friendly face on hand for any help you may need!  We endeavour to fit volunteer work around your interests and needs and we welcome feedback at every stage of your time at Heligan.

Your data is stored in accordance with data protection regulation and your application and requirements can be kept confidential if desired (subject to Health and Safety requirements)  This would all be discussed at your induction.

At no time are you tied to remaining a volunteer with us.  We do complete a Volunteer Agreement with you when you start, which sets out our expectations as well as yours but you are at liberty to stop volunteering at any time.

With any new volunteer we have a month’s review to see how you are finding things and if we can improve your time here – sometimes a short spell makes people realise they would really like to try a different area and this is something we will always try to accommodate.
